Inventor Barry says:'Since I have been a full time artist I have spent more and more time painting 'en plein air' both at home and abroad. Over the years I have honed my painting equipment down to the minimum due mainly to the ever diminishing airline baggage allowances but also ease of carrying. In that time I have gone through a multitude of different palettes and boxes which have been either too big, too heavy or too EXPENSIVE !! So I decided to design and produce one myself !... and here it is !!!!!'

PLEASE NOTE: THE VIDEO SHOWS AN OLD VERSION OF THE PALETTE.. THE NEW PALETTE HAS ONE MIXING WELL IN THE LID AND NOT TWO AS SHOWN ON SOME OF THE SCENES.ON THE VIDEO.
- 2 trays with 4 deep mixing wells in each.
- 1 flat mixing tray which also forms a top on the paint compartment when closed.
- 1 deep lid with one deep mixing well.
- A removable central paint compartment with: 13 deep wells ideal for squeezed tube colours as well as full and half pans.
- A universal thumb plate for both left and righthanded painters.
The palette was originally designed to be used with tube paint but the whole pans and half pans supplied by Winsor & Newton fit in the box if you wish to use pans of paint (although they are a bit of a tight squeeze)
Note from the manufacturers about fitting empty pans into the Cloverleaf Paint Box: - "The only whole pans and half pans that fit perfectly in the paint box are those made by Winsor and Newton. Winsor & Newton old semi used pans fit in the palette and won't come out. If you are using a new pan then paint the sides with watercolor paint let it dry and push it in."
If you want to use tube colour, it can be squeezed straight into the palette.
The empty pans we sell on this web site to use with tube colour do not fit in this pallete.
Disappointed it does not take full pans. I buy empty pans and fill them from tubes. These do not fit though the blurb suggests otherwise. I would also have liked a key ring with which to better hold it. I will probably make a water holder to fit into the centre piece. otherwise good material and folds neatly Michael Pringle (GOSPORT, United Kingdom) on 15 Jan 2014
Ken Bromley's replies: The Box was designed to take tube colour directly into the small wells. Some plastic pans fit in the cloverleaf box, but the fit is not perfect.
Excellent built quality, light weight, and good size. Love all the mixing wells that comes with it, can also take out the centre tray and use the surface below for a flat mixing area, a total of 12 different sections. Before I would use 3 small individual palettes and now just this one does it all. Very practical design and layout, able to spin it to get wells closer where as a square palette you would have to lift the entire thing. The metal hinges rotates very tight and sturdy, this box will not break under normal outdoor usage. I did find that for whatever reason this particular plastic does seem to attract more dust than my other palettes. I would suggest cleaning this expensive paint box with an old brush under running water instead of wiping it down with paper towel which run the risk of pushing the paint into the plastic surface and staining your palette (like all other plastic palette). This is an item that can definitely last a life time. Cam Lam (Burnaby, Canada) on 11 Feb 2014
This product has good wells for whole pans or for adding colours from tubes. Seems very sturdy and compact for the amount of mixing area it provides. Every part fits well together. Bought for travelling though I would use it for outdoor painting here in UK. Fits well into my small painting backpack. Would probably find it rather large to carry around sightseeing as I have a bijou paint box for that but great for doing larger paintings. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to paint outside.
