Golden have a long histroy of producing quality artists colours, with Sam Golden joining his uncle Leonard Bocour at Bocour Artist Colours producing hand ground oil colours in the 1930's. Their shop in Manhattan was a haunt for many influencial artists including Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Helen Frankenthaler. It wasn't until the 1940s that they started developing acrylic paint. It wasn't until Sam had retired briefly after 30 years in the paint making business, and then came out of retirement, that he eventually founded Golden Artist Colours Inc. in 1980. A true family run business with his wife, son and daughter-in-law Golden was set up with the simple aim of "making tools for artists". Golden have continued to grow and innovate to this day, with their most recent addition to their acrylic range being OPEN acrylics.
