Description

The ArtGraf Soft Carbon Pencil has a smooth texture and delivers results similar to charcoal. Unlike charcoal, this pencil is soft and easy to apply. These pencils create rich, dark blacks which can be blended, erased and also manipulated with water to create transparent washes.

  • Very black

been looking for a long time for a dense black graphite. This is it. Jet black. The pencil is easier to use than the cake. Very water soluble and lovely effects if drawn into standing water on paper. Or can use dry as normal pencil. Not easy to erase though.

  • Quirky size; otherwise OK

This pencil has a non-standard, small diameter casing with a bigger-than-Chinagraph core. Folk with large hands would struggle with its manipulation. Struggles in a pencil sharpener - needs a knife. BUT... I cannot fault what it's meant to do - it's water-soluble and draws the blackest line you would want in a sketch - very soft; treat gently. A downside is that I cannot find a pencil-holder for its remaindered stumps (eg. as Lyra or Derwent) - so if you find one, Bromleys - send it on!
This is a useful alternative to the Chinagraph pencil (especially no. 480 or 808), which are like hens' teeth these days.
