This reliable favourite is a general purpose semi gloss medium which speeds drying, improves flow and reduces brush stroke retention.
Liquins are a family of alkyd mediums which are made by treating naturally derived oil, like linseed oil with alcohol and acid. Alkyds speed the drying rate of conventional oil colour by about 50%, from 2 to 12 days to 1 to 5 days (touch dry). Paintings will still need to dry 6 to 12 months depending on the colour and thickness of the paint layer before varnishing. Alkyds can do all the things that conventional drying oils such as linseed oil, stand oil and others do like blending, glazing and altering consistency except they dry at a faster rate. This makes them a great choice for artists under time constraints.
after years of using other mediums I must admit this product is by far best suited to my needs whilst working with oils..not only the way the medium helps to make the oil paint flow smoothly, but the drying time is superb, usually by the next day....only one complaint...its a pain getting the security cap off the bottle...meaning that I need to decant the product and discard the original container. I have bought two of these from different sources and find that, like all W&N bottled mediums they gradually dry up around the bottle neck in storage (even in shops!) and make it very difficult to open the bottle. The "child-proof" (strong man proof?) bottles are the culprit and the how-to-open diagram on the bottle cap is obscure and no help whatsoever. I have gone back to slow-drying WN Artist's Medium, taking care to decant it first (a normal clean jam-jar holds about 250 ml). A pity W&N don't supply Liquin in tubes! Or at least re-design their bottles! Terence Nunn (London) on 10 Jan 2015
They are meant to be child proof but I have enormous difficulty opening them - as do many others. Biff (UK) on 19 Mar 2013
Ken Bromley's replies: It can be a bit tricky with the childproof screw top, but if you are having extreme difficulty opening the screw lid, it might be faulty. So please contact us, so we can check this for you.
