The Textile Artist - Expressive Stitches by Jan Dowson is a 'no-rules' guide to creating original textile art. Jan demonstrates how to create awe-inspiring, beautifully stitched textile art full of detail, colour and expression - whether it's inspired by a landscape, garden, animal or memory!
In Expressive Stitches Jan guides you through her creative process, beginning with collecting and storing natural items. As the book progresses she encourages you to explore different patterns, texture, media and markings which will all influence your final designs. Simple but effective methods are used to alter fabrics before they are stitched - these include dyeing, embellishing and stamping. Jan then shows how to transform your altered fabrics into vibrant, textured artwork using a combination of traditional hand stitching, machine stitching and other media.
After discussing her techniques, Jan guides you through some step-by-step projects. See how her three most renowned pieces of work are created: the stitched landscape, the memory cloth and the bird sculpture. Each project has a full breakdown of materials, tool and techniques so you can understand and see the development of her creations. This book is sure to inspire any textile artist!
