Leonardo da Vinci was born in Italy and was a painter, sculpter, architect and engineer. He had a relatively small output of work, with only 20 surviving paintings that can definitely be attributed to him however his legacy has been profound and our data reveals his work is celebrated cross-culturally. He is best known for his Last Supper and Mona Lisa paintings which can be found in the Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan and the Louvre in Paris.

Although Mexican feminist artist Frida Kahlo came second worldwide, popular for her vibrant portraits and self-portraits and depiction of Mexican indigenous culture, there were only 2 females out of the 13 global winners. The other being Italian 17th century baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi.

Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh, famous for not only his collection of 800 oil paintings and 700 drawings but also for being a tortured soul, taking his own life in 1890, was the world’s third most popular artist. Van Gogh’s famous Starry Night oil painting is housed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
