Art Group of the Month – Monton

This month we visit a group that’s been running for 34 years – Monton Art Group in Manchester. They are a self help group who dabble in all sorts of media and exhibit regularly. We caught up with them to find out the secret of their success.

When & where do we meet?

Wednesday evenings 7:30pm – 9:30pm

Monton Unitarian Church Hall, Monton Green, Monton, Eccles, Manchester, M30 9NX.

It is pay as you go, £4 each time.  This include a break for tea or coffee and biscuits!

At the moment there are around 20 of us and attendance is usually between 15 and 18 every week.

Who is the group suitable for?

The group is suitable for all levels, from complete beginners to experienced artists.

A variety of media are used including watercolour, oil, acrylics, pastels, coloured pencil. Members with a particular strength in one media often help others, especially beginners.

How do the classes run?

We do our own things but also help each other.  From time to time, we invite a professional artist to do a demo.  We sometimes propose an activity to the other members of the group, for example, painting a still life we would arrange ourselves.  However, only people who are interested join in the particular activity. No activity is compulsory.  We believe this is a strength of our group.  The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and at the same time inspiring.

We exhibit our work two to three times a year, one exhibition takes place at the Eccles Town Hall, the others at Christmas and Summer Church fairs.
