Description

By Kees van Aalst

This book introduces the concept of realistic abstract painting - a loosely impressionistic form of painting that leaves much to the imagination of the viewer. The subject, though recognisable, is executed with freedom and fluidity, resulting in a painting that is far from photographic. It has been described as the 'grey' area between figurative and abstract painting, yet there is nothing dull about this style, as the numerous colourful examples in this book show. Aimed at those with some experience of painting, all the examples in this book use various forms of water-based media, including gouache, acrylics and watercolours. Designed to inspire, this book will stimulate your imagination; encourage you to try out the various methods described; and help you develop your own way of painting in this exciting style.

  • Fantastic!

As an artist of many years experience, like most, I have read an awful lot of art books, but this one rates right up at the top. It is full of colour photos of work by many artists, gives a good starting point even for a beginner, then goes on immediately to business. I am a wildlife and landscape artist so this was totally different and refreshing. DON'T be put off by the title, the works are actually semi-abstract, and very similar to a lot of pen and wash but with a great new approach, to me at least. Kees Van Alst is a master, and the works by Viktoria Prishedka and her husband are exquisite.

  • Inspiring

I found this book fascinating and will certainly give some of the ideas a 'go'. However I suspect that they require quite a high level of skill, both in drawing and use of water colour. Nevertheless for those interested in abstract art this book does what it says on the cover - it explores Realistic Abstracts.
