Working in the wilds of Yorkshire David draws and sketches waterfalls, bridges, barns and cottages in the wet, windswept dales. He then travels to the French Pyrenees to paint the rugged scenery of the high mountain peaks covered in snow and ice –even a few mountaineers. Finally, he chooses one of his sketches to work up into a full watercolour in his studio. The film is full of useful information and action-packed—as always he manages to have a few adventures along the way!
David Bellamy, a member of the British Watercolour Society, is a popular painter who enjoys painting and sketching in inaccessible places. He exhibits widely, runs his own courses and has written several successful books.

"David Bellamy’s many admirers will welcome the appearance of his latest DVD and, knowing his interest in nature at its wildest, will not be surprised by its content. It begins in the Yorkshire Dales. His first subject is a distant farmhouse flanked by trees against a luminous sky and David paints a quick watercolour impression above a loosely handled foreground. He then makes quick sketches on cartridge paper of his next four subjects for later development in the studio. For the first, an old packhorse bridge, he uses a graphite pencil and a patent water-holding brush. For his next, a waterfall, he uses burnt umber to create a strong monochrome impression, concentrating on tone without the added complication of colour. He uses charcoal boldly to capture the atmosphere of his next subject, a limestone gorge, and a range of pencils for sketching an old barn and group of white stone cottages.
The DVD then switches to an impressive stretch of the French Pyrenees where he tackles the rugged mountain scenery well above the snow line. Here, he is accompanied by his daughter, who not only keeps him company but also acts as a model when he wishes to include figures in his composition. He uses pure watercolour and line and wash for several bold impressions of the towering mountain peaks. The DVD ends with David using one of his sketches to develop a finished watercolour in his studio.
His field work is rather looser than his usual watercolour painting and was well suited to the wild nature of his subjects."
"Let’s start with the intrepid David Bellamy! His latest DVD, Wild Landscapes in Watercolour has all the excitement, variety, skilful demonstrations and helpful information that you could wish for in a film of this type. It is truly inspirational, even if, unlike David, you do not aspire to working in the wilds of Yorkshire or scaling the snow-clad peaks of the high Pyrenees.
The majority of the demonstrations are made on the spot and the range of ideas and techniques is impressive: sketching with pencil, and tone and wash sketching with watersoluble graphite pencils; drawing with charcoal (of Gordale Scar); pen and ink sketching; and monochrome and colour studies in watercolour. David also shows us how to sketch from the car (although this is not his usual practice) and how to work from the resource material back in the studio."
