You never need to be without painting gear

by David Howell PRSMA (Somerset UK) on 5 Mar 2010

"This delightful little box is a very neat way of carrying 12 ½ pans, complete with a water supply in a package the size of a compact digital camera.

In operation it sits easily on the hand, held with a thumb ring, with the water container conveniently clipped on the end and resting the mixing well section on the forefinger whilst working prevents it drooping. Getting water out of the bottle section is a little tricky but a little shaking does the job and it holds sufficient to fill the container twice.

The whole point is that it's not intended to replace a normal watercolour box in the field but slipped in a pocket with a retractable brush and a small pad means that you never need to be without painting gear.

A real treat

by Nijaz Lukovac (Sarajevo) on 2 Aug 2010

"For someone who likes tiny gadget-like gear (like me) this is a real treat. However, I have a couple of objections: half-pans are rattling after removal of wrapping paper. The ring should have been provided with a stop-notch for the case when it's not needed (much like Talens-Rembrandt). Mat finish could have looked nicer.

Although I like the feel of heavy metal, by definition portable set could benefit from light metal alternative design. The choice of the palette is acceptable (unlike field box) but could have been better. Having said all that, I must add that I still LOVE IT. At this price it is definitely recommendable!"

I love this tiny little paintbox!

by Therese (Tennessee, USA) on 12 Jun 2007

"After reading the reviews, I gave careful consideration and decided to give this box a try.

It's a nice heavy box with an attachable water cup. I like to paint holding the box as an artist palette, with my finger in the thumb ring.
The tiny size fits perfectly in my hand and my fingers naturally support the palette lid.

The water bottle fills very quickly and easily from my kitchen tap. It holds exactly enough water to fill the cup twice. The water does not come out easily, but I found a simple way to overcome this. I insert a thin coffee-stir straw into the hole, & the water comes out nicely. The straw also stores conveniently between the paints.

This paintbox is so handy to use & fits nicely in my pocket for on-the-go paintings.

I love this tiny little paintbox!"

Definitely NOT recommended...

by Stephen (Norwich) on 10 Apr 2007

"Satisfyingly heavy and compact, this had seemed an excellent choice for one who still thinks 'paintboxes' should be made of black enamelled metal.

But in use, not so satisfying. The lid sags when open, so it is difficult to retain a wash. The water bottle has a very small capacity, and it is difficult to get water into the very narrow spout (I used a small syringe). Worst of all, once in it is nearly impossible to get the water back out again due to the lack of any vent. So I'm left still needing to carry a separate water bottle.

I will probably fit a small brass tube inside to vent the water bottle, but in truth I'm very disappointed. Maybe I'll just have to overcome my dislike of plastic and get the Field Box.

Definitely NOT recommended."
