Using the Website - Beginners Guide

We have tried to make our website as easy as possible for our customers to use, and are constantly updating it to make it even better. If there is anything about it that you don't like, or find difficult to use please let us know - we have made many changes to the site as a result of customer feedback, after all, who better to tell us how to do it than those of you who use the site!

Below I have put together a beginners guide on how to shop on our website, for more detailed information on certain aspects, such as gift vouchers and reward points, please see our other info pages.

Navigating the Website

There are several ways you can navigate around the website, the method you use is up to you - they all get you to the same pages in the end!

Browsing Products and Adding to your Cart

First of all click on the Online Store tab at the top of the page.

Once on the Online store page you will see down the left hand side of the screen a menu of categories. The same categories are also displayed in the main part of the page along with relevant images. You can click on either of these in order to get to the same page.

Eg. if you click on the 'Brushes' link on the left hand side, it will take you to the same page as clicking on the 'Brushes' image on in the main part of the page. This is the same throughout the site, so you may find it easier to navigate using the left hand menu, or by clicking on the images on the main part of the page.

When you click on a category, eg. Brushes, you will see that there are sub-categories, eg. Oil & Acrylic Brushes and Watercolour Brushes. Each sub-category may have further sub categories depending on the product. This is just to make sure there are not too many things on each page and to make it easier for you to find things.

At any time you will be able to see which category you are in by looking at the side menu, or at the breadcrumbs at the top of the page. In the example shown below you can see that we are in the category 'Winsor & Newton Watercolour Brushes' which is a sub-category of Watercolour Brushes and Brushes. If at any point you want to go back to a different category, you can click on either the side menu, or on the breadcrumbs.

Once you are in a category with products in it, you can choose to sort the products out in different orders. You can either choose to sort them by price, or by product name. This is useful if there are a lot of products on a page.

Once you find the product you want click on it and it will take you to the product page. If there is more than one kind of that product, they will all be listed on that page. Eg. All sizes of W&N Series 7 Brushes will be listed on one page.

To buy a product, simply enter the number you want to buy in the QTY box which corresponds with the product you want to buy.  You can buy multiple items at once, simply fill out all the quantities and press 'Add to Cart'. This will add all the products to your cart.

When you click on 'Add to Cart' you should see a pop up in the top right corner of the screen telling you how many products you have just added to your cart.

Reviewing your Basket

Once you have added items to your basket, there are a couple of ways you can review what is in there.

The first way to easily review your cart's contents without leaving the page you are on is to hover your mouse over where it says 'YOUR CART:' at the top right corner of the page. When you do this you will see a pop up showing you all the contents of your cart. From here you can add or remove items from your cart by pressing on the '+' and '-' or you can go to the checkout which will take you to the cart page.

The second way to review your cart is to press the Cart button on the grey bar below the logo.

This will take you straight to the Cart page. On this page you will be able to see the contents of your cart. If you want to amend any quantities, just enter the number you want in the QTY box and press 'Update Cart'. To delete an item from your cart simply change the QTY to 0 and press 'Update Cart'. The item will be removed. Once you are ready, click on the 'Proceed to Secure Checkout' button.

Secure Checkout

Once you have clicked on 'Proceed to Secure Checkout' if you are not logged in you will be taken a page asking you to log in. If this is the first time you have ordered from the site and you haven't yet registered then you need to click on the box for new customer, you will then be taken to a page where you can fill out all your address information and contact details. If you have already registered, enter your log in details and you will be taken to the same page, but all your details will already be filled out.

If you are having problems logging in please see our FAQ.

The next page is the personal details page. If you have logged in this page should already be filled out with your details. If you are registering as a new user then you will need to fill out all the fields marked with a red *.

Make sure that you fill out the billing address for the card you are paying on in the personal details section. If you want your order to be sent to a different address eg. you place of work, then click on 'Send to a different address' in the Shipping address section and fill out the address you want the goods delivered to.

If you have any delivery instructions fill them out in the deliver instructions box. When everything is filled out press 'Proceed'.

Shipping

The next page you will see is the shipping page. If you are in the UK Mainland you will have the option of either regular or express shipping. The cost of the shipping will depend on the value of the order. You will be shown how much more you need to spend for free shipping at the top of the box. Select which shipping method you prefer and click 'Proceed'. If you decide you want to add more items to your cart in order to get free shipping, click on the logo at the top left of the screen to be taken back to the home page.

If you are in the Highlands or Islands of the UK, or abroad you will be taken to a slightly different shipping page. We have a slightly different shipping price structure for addresses not in the UK Mainland. We calculate shipping based on the size, weight and value of the order. In order to make sure that we give you the best price for shipping, all calculations are done manually once you have placed the order. Once we have calculated the shipping price we will set it for your order.

When choosing your shipping options, you have two options. Option 1 means that whatever the shipping cost you will need to approve it before the order comes through to us. You will receive an email when we set shipping and you can choose to approve the shipping, or cancel the order.

If you select the second option, you can select a value that as long as the shipping we set is below, will automatically approve. Using this method speeds things up a lot as we do not have to wait for you to respond to an email. The best way to use this option is to have a look at our general shipping prices so you have an idea of what it may cost, and what you would be happy to pay, and set the max shipping at that.

If the shipping we set is greater than the value you set here, you will receive an email to let you know how much it is so that you can then approve it or cancel your order.

Payment Page

Once you have chosen your shipping option you will be taken to the payment page. On this page you will be able to review the items in your cart, the order total.

If it is all correct you can now enter your payment details. You need to fill out all the relevant details which are on your card, eg. Issue number is only required if you are using a Switch/Maestro card which has an issue number on it. If you have any additional comments relating to your order you can enter them in the 'Additional Comments' box. Once everything is filled out press 'submit' and your order will be placed.
