We would like to say a massive THANK YOU to everyone who entered our Cover Competition.

This year we had the highest number of entries since we started our Cover Competition several years ago and the standard was exceedingly high. This made the task of choosing the shortlist very difficult, but with much deliberation we have finally done it. It is now just up to you to pick a winner!

Click here to see the short list and vote for your top 3 entries. If you made it to the shortlist, congratulations! If you didn’t make it this time, make sure you enter again next year!

Expressive big brush portraits

Tim Benson is an award winning London based artist whose portraits are attracting attention wherever they are exhibited. Tim’s approach to portraiture is modern and exciting. Using a single three inch bristle brush and just four colours plus white he conjures up the very essence of his sitters. This is a DVD which shows an alternative to the traditional painstaking approach to painting portraits in oil. Tim works with no initial pre drawing and conjures up a characterful portrait using just blocks of colour. This is a DVD to inspire you to have a go for yourself. In this DVD Tim paints two full portraits – Ron and Sheila Sewell.

Duration: 90 mins + Bonus features

Cover Competition Voting Opens on Monday!

We would like to thank every who entered our cover competition – this year saw the most entries ever and the very high standard has made choosing the short list very difficult.

The short list will be online from Monday where you can vote for your top three paintings.

If you entered make sure you check the website on Monday to see if you have made it to the short list and get voting!

Above is an example of what the finished works will look like

We are happy to be supporting the 100 Pebbles event taking place on Sunday 24th July. The event will be part of Glasgow’s Merchant City Festival which attracted over 70,000 visitors last year, and looks to attract even more this year.

The challenge will be held the Art Exposure Gallery in Parnie Street and will start at 10.30am on Sunday 24th July and will finish at 6pm, this gives artist Ian Rawnsley a total of 7.5 hrs to complete the 100 piece artwork.

All 100 paintings will be seascapes inspired by the beauty and wonder of the Scottish coast. In a simplified style painted in acrylic to allow relatively quick drying time.

Each work will be original and will have a common theme and consistency to produce a consistent final artwork. The final piece will be approx 14ft wide and 4-5 ft high.

Each piece will sell at £20 a piece to raise a total of £2000 for the Beatson Pebble Appeal.

Ian says:
“As a professional artist for more than six years I have mulled the idea of painting a large number of paintings in one day for charity, and it has evolved into the 100 Pebbles event out of the experiences of friends and family with effects of cancer on their lives.
The name comes from the Beatson Pebble appeal and the mammoth challenge of creating an artwork out of 100 separate paintings.

The Beatson unit in Glasgow is an International centre of excellence for cancer research and care and with the Macmillan organisation recent research that 4 out of 10 of us will be affected directly by cancer in our lives support for the Beatson’s work has never been so important.

Ken Bromley have supported this event in difficult financial times and without their help on sourcing the stretched canvas for the event it would have been much harder to get the event off the ground. A big thank you to Richard Bromley and his staff.

There has been interest and a number of pledges have been received to start the ball rolling, anyone interested in purchasing before the event please contact Laura at the Beatson fund-raising team via email – laura.morton@glasgow.ac.uk

Any pre-sales before the event will help us get off to a great start. A sample image of the type of work so people know what they are getting. Note shade and colour will differ as expected for an original art work.”

Updates and news on the event can be found on Ians Blog.
